UX Virtual Symposium
Designing for Behavior Change
Thursday, June 2

We know that the success of the work we do depends upon our understanding of the customer and their experience. There’s no headline there. But knowing when and how to build research into our development process, where it can influence our work, and the tools to garner it, can help us design better products that mirror the behaviors and interests of our customers.

In this seminar, three experts discuss their approach to designing for behavior change by creating a feedback loop that combines data research and testing, iterative development, and design strategies that click with customers.

Our Agenda:

Improve Product Design with Game Thinking
- Amy Jo Kim

Onboarding
- Samuel Hulick

Combining Qualitative & Quantitative Research

You'll understand what users expect from your product, how you engage them, how you test and determine what users want.

Headshot of Amy Jo Kim

June 2 12:00pm ET

How to Improve Your Product Design with Game Thinking

with Amy Jo Kim

Entrepreneur, startup coach, and social game designer, Amy Jo Kim will look at strategies that you can use to convert new visitors into repeat customers. Amy Jo uses a four-stage framework to define the user journey, from Discovery to Onboarding, Habit Building, and Mastery.

Once a new product or feature has been successfully introduced to users during the onboarding phase, the next step in the user’s journey is habit building. How can we create products that customers will integrate into their daily lives and activities?

Amy Jo will discuss:

  • Strategies you can use to create habit building experiences
  • How research plays a key role in defining and shaping the user journey

According to Amy Jo’s research, it takes three weeks for users to make a habit out of a product. She calls it Day 21, and it is a critical target that you should be aiming for.

Onboarding for Behavior Change

with Samuel Hulick

Onboarding is the first interaction that a customer has with a new product or feature. UX Designer Samuel Hulick has spent a lot of time deconstructing what makes a good onboarding experience. He will walk us through best practices for designing for user behaviors.

Samuel will discuss:

  • Examples of tool tips done well
  • How to onboard customers without overwhelming or boring them
  • Using qualitative and quantitative feedback to improve the onboarding experience

It’s just like your mother told you: first impressions are important. The success of your onboarding will put users on the right path toward habit building, and integrating your product into their daily lives.

Combining Qualitative and Quantitative Research

with Laura Klein

User Experience Designer, Product Manager, and Lean Startup expert Laura Klein will show us how quantitative and qualitative research can be used in each stage of the user journey. She’ll share tips for how to use data to identify “friction points” in your design, where users are falling out along the journey you’ve defined for them.

Laura will review methods for measuring your onboarding process to determine what is working and what isn’t, and offer specific tactics for testing your solutions.

Laura will help you:

  • Understand the difference between qualitative and quantitative research
  • Learn when to use qualitative and quantitative research, and how you can use them together
  • Improve your onboarding experience using research
